In Flanders fields the poppies blow Between the crosses, row on row, That mark our place; and in the sky The larks, still bravely singing, fly Scarce heard amid the guns below.
We are the Dead. Short days ago We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow, Loved, and were loved, and now we lie In Flanders Fields.
Take up our quarrel with the foe: To you from failing hands we throw The torch; be yours to hold it high. If ye break faith with us who die We shall not sleep, though poppies grow In Flanders Fields.
- John McCrae
As some of you may know, tomorrow, November 11th, is Remembrance Day here in Canada. I'm gearing down to do some serious remembering tomorrow. Lost some friends since last year, and it's possible I will lose more before the next. I like to remember every day as it comes to me but Nov. 11th is a good day just to put aside a minute or two dedicated just to that.
As most of you also know, my boyfriend serves in the Canadian Armed Forces as an Infantryman. Tomorrow, I will be thinking especially of him, and most particularly at this time as he is now getting ready to go on a tour of duty in Afghanistan. I will be thinking about my friends who are and their families as well as they ready themselves to deploy in April 2010.
It doesn't matter if you have or have had any friends or family in the military. November 11th is a day to remember all soldiers whom we did not know that laid down their lives in a battle that was not theirs to ensure the freedom and life that we have today.
To all those serving and departed, thank you from the bottom of my heart.
